During a Sunday morning in late February, the children of SOS Children's Village Meru woke up finding a huge male elephant in their village, located near the slopes of Mount Kenya and in the shade of the forest imento, home to many wild animals including buffalo, monkeys, leopards and elephants.
The association SOS Children's Foundation deals SOS Children's Villages accommodate the orphans or expelled from their parents (such as child soldiers ), where they find a new home and a warm loving family. SOS Children's Villages are present in 132 countries around the world, just as in Kenya.
"Watching an elephant is a favorite pastime of both the young guests of the village of employees and volunteers who work daily with children ," said Peter Wambugu, director of SOS Children's Village in Meru, "but usually there fun to look beyond the fence, while feeding on fodder! "
The elephant that visited the SOS village was identified as belonging to a couple who had strayed out of the forest during the night and had been pushed off by people in a neighboring community. Shortly after dawn, an animal was able to return to the forest, while the other has been wandering in the first place, in the spaces of the Kenya Methodist University and then headed to the SOS village overcoming the big fences .
The director of the village recalls: "Many of us in the SOS village in Meru had never seen an elephant so closely, and we woke up from a mixture of wonder and excitement, some of us are limited to spy on him from the verandas of the houses the village, while others, more courageous, have approached from the meadows. Abbiamo subito avuto l'impressione che l'elefante si sentisse al sicuro nel villaggio...". Anche un altro membro dello staff volontario di SOS conferma "L'elefante deve avere intuito che il Villaggio SOS è un posto per tutti, un luogo dove ogni creatura viene curata con amore, sicurezza e rispetto, dove i diritti dei bambini sono protetti e i nostri piccoli ospiti, rimasti orfani e soli, possono trovare una casa e una famiglia adottiva !"
L'elefante, dal canto suo, appariva infatti così rilassato che anche l'abbaiare di 5 cani feroci li vicino non sono riusciti ad intimidirlo! Al contrario, procedeva lentamente quasi a passi di valzer in un campo sottostante la casa dei piccoli Guests at the SOS Children's Village, was swimming in mud, meandered through the gardens of the village and knocked down the fences as if they were cobwebs! Although this is the third time that an elephant comes to visit the SOS Children's Village in Meru, no child or staff member of SOS was never wounded. There are ongoing plans to build an electric fence on the side of the village towards the forest to avoid future visits by the local wildlife. But the visit of an elephant is certainly an event that SOS children will never forget and that will be added to a series of beautiful moments and memories that only through solidarity , efforts of volunteers and the generosity of sponsorships are possible!
