The battery is a super Italian study, edited by Riccardo Signorelli

Elena Comelli

A liter of gasoline contains 35 times the energy stored in a battery conventional lead-acid and six times that used in a lithium ion battery, the most widely used in electric cars last generation. "In this report, called energy density, is the whole problem of electric vehicles," the researcher thinks Italian Riccardo Signorelli, batteries that they will be. If there were bacteria that can reach the same energy density of fossil fuels and to load instantly like a tank at the pump, the internal combustion engine, together with its pestilential exhaust gases, is already retired.

carbon nanotubes - Signorelli's mission is to compete with gasoline, improving the performance batteries. And there succeeds quite well: in thirteen years of study, from the degree in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic of Milan until doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, this 32 year old from Bergamo has developed a first prototype, which uses tiny structures of nanotubes carbon for energy storage. "This is not true of a battery, but a capacitor, which has a much higher power density of batteries and can upload and download instantly, almost indefinitely, because it works on the basis of a physical principle, not electrochemical» , says Italian researcher, who has spent his six years at MIT with Joel Schindall, director of the legendary Lees (Laboratory for Electromagnetic and Electronic Systems), to develop the technology of carbon nanotubes.
FUNDING - Now his "ultracapacitors" has received 5.3 million dollars from the U.S. government and two other private investors, to finance the development and industrialization, within two years. With the grant the Ministry of Energy, Signorelli founded his company, FastCap, enlisting Schindall also as a consultant, and speaks English, Italian more readily, especially if the question becomes technical. The walls of the tubes developed by Signorelli have a thickness of just 12 atoms and grow, like blades of grass, alloggiando nei minuscoli interstizi particelle cariche di energia.
It would be ideal for some of the fundamental problems of lithium batteries: duration, cost and size. "We work to optimize the result, lowering the minimum weights, volumes and costs, but we have already received many reports of interest from the automotive industry," says yet Signorelli, who as a boy, Pesenti Technical Institute in Bergamo, has always had the passion and electricity is now very pleased to be able to make a contribution "energy" in a watershed moment for the world of transport.
