Come tutte le altre razze canine, anche il pastore maremmano abruzzese presenta delle precise peculiarità sia per quanto riguarda l'aspetto esteriore che il carattere.
La razza del pastore maremmano abruzzese appartiene alla famiglia dei pastori e bovari, in particolare al gruppo dei grandi cani bianchi dell'Europa centrale.
